The RSV vaccine: who should get it (and who shouldn't)

RSV vaccines became available for adults in 2023. Here's who actually benefits, and who can skip it.

What RSV is

Respiratory syncytial virus — usually a mild cold in healthy adults, but a serious cause of pneumonia and hospitalization in older adults and infants.

Who should strongly consider it

Adults 75+, adults 60–74 with chronic heart or lung disease, diabetes, severe obesity, or who live in nursing facilities. Pregnant women at 32–36 weeks to protect newborns.

Who can probably skip

Healthy adults under 60 with no chronic conditions. The current recommendation does not include routine RSV vaccination for this group.

How often

It's a single dose. We don't yet know if a booster will be recommended later — current evidence suggests protection lasts at least 2 seasons.

Brands

Arexvy (GSK), Abrysvo (Pfizer), and mResvia (Moderna). All effective. We carry all three at Parkway.
