When's the best time to get a flu shot?

The pharmacist's rule: late September through October. Here's why timing matters more than most people think.

The window

Flu activity in Philadelphia typically peaks December through February. Antibody protection from the vaccine peaks 2–4 weeks after the shot and gradually wanes after about 4–6 months.

Too early?

Getting the shot in August leaves you with reduced protection by January or February. Not ideal unless you're 65+ (in which case earlier is fine since the high-dose version waning is less of a concern).

Too late?

December and January are still helpful — flu season runs through March. Better late than never.

Special groups

Pregnant women: any trimester, as soon as the vaccine is available. Children 6 months–8 years getting flu shots for the first time need two doses, 4 weeks apart.
